The Film

Good Morning Vietnam was released on December 23, 1987 by Touchstone Pictures – a Disney Studios affiliate company. Directed by Barry Levinson and starring Robin Williams and Forrest Whittaker, the film ended up being very lucrative, earning $125 million and winning Robin Williams a Golden Globe.[1]It was a striking and new interpretation of Vietnam, particularly as close as it was to the end of the actual war, and the idea of a comedy about such a sensitive subject initially made it difficult to get the film idea off the ground. [2] According to Producer Mark Johnson it was “a comedy with a very serious underbelly.”[3]
